About Nelson Mandela University

Formerly known as Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, The Nelson Mandela University (NMU) was established in 2005 following the merger of three institutions, namely the Port Elizabeth campus of Vista University (Vista PE), the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE), and the PE Technikon. Although the institution was founded in 1882, its history dates back to that year.

 

The University has seven faculties: Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences; Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Education; Built Environment and Technology; Faculty of Humanities; Faculty of Law and Faculty of Science;  Faculty of Health Sciences. In these faculties, you can choose from more than 500 different study programs. Building, art and design, engineering, health and environmental sciences, chartered accounting, and information technology are some of the specialities of the University.

Tegkor/Nelson Mandela University Accounting Bursary 2024

Nelson Mandela University invites students to apply for the Tegkoror Nelson Mandela University Accounting Bursary. The bursary is available for undergraduate (1st, 2nd, and 3rd year) and postgraduate Accounting students.

These fields are covered by the 1st year bursary:

  • Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting
  • Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting Sciences

These fields are covered by the 2nd and 3rd year bursary:

  • Chartered Accounting (BCom Accounting)
  • General Accounting BCom
  • Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting Sciences

These fields are covered by the Postgraduate bursary:

  • PGDA-CTA (Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting)
  • PGDA (Postgraduate Diploma in Accountancy)
  • PGDIA (Postgraduate Diploma in Internal Auditing)

The value of the bursary varies depending on the year of study:

  • Up to R12 500 will be awarded to first-year students.
  • A second and third student will receive a funding of up to R7 500.
  • Students in postgraduate studies will receive funding up to R7 500.

Students will receive scholarship awards on their bursar’s student account. In addition to the bursary, you may also receive another scholarship or award (if the award is listed on your application).

Eligibility Criteria

The following requirements must be met by applicants before they can apply (please note that if you do not meet all the requirements, your application will not be considered):

1st-year students:

  • You must be a citizen of South Africa
  • It is a requirement that you complete your Matriculation
  • Academically speaking, you must have done well in Matric
  • Mathematics in Matric must have been passed with a minimum score of 80%
  • A minimum Applicant Score (AS) of 420 is required
  • In order to start your 1st year of full-time study in 2024, you must be accepted
  • At Nelson Mandela University, you must be accepted to study for a BCom Accounting or BCom Accounting Sciences degree
  • Financial need (students with household income between R350000 and R600000 per year – those wishing to study further but not entitled to NSFAS) will be given preference.

Students in their second and third years:

  • You must be a citizen of South Africa
  • If you are a student at Nelson Mandela University, you must be pursuing a BCom General Accounting or BCom Accounting (Chartered Accounting) qualification.
  • In 2024, you must be in your second or third year of full-time study
  • The following academic results are required: a minimum of 70% for the first year of the 2024 program OR a minimum of 65% for the second year of the program
  • You must have made a significant contribution to society or others during 2024 – student evidence of social commitment will be considered
  • Students who are in financial need (those with household incomes of between R350 000 and R600 000 per year but do not qualify for NSFAS) will be given preference.

Postgraduate students:

  • You must be a citizen of South Africa
  • You must be enrolled in a postgraduate degree program at Nelson Mandela University for the 2024 academic year
  • You must be enrolled full-time at Nelson Mandela University in a program leading to a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting (PGDA-CTA), PGDA (Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting) or PGDIA (Postgraduate Diploma in Internal Auditing) degree.
  • In your third year of undergraduate studies, you must have achieved a minimum weighted average of 60% OR in your PGDA program, a minimum weighted average of 55%
  • Students with financial need (those with a household income between R350 000 and R600 000 per annum – those who wish to study further but are not eligible to apply for NSFAS) will be given priority.

How to apply?

Applicants must download the Tegkor/ NMU Bursary application form 2024 and complete it.

You must submit your application online at: Moodle

Along with your online application, please submit the following supporting documents (you must submit all of these documents – missing documents may result in your application being disqualified):

1st-year students:

  • Document of identification (copy only)
  • The parent’s or guardian’s proof of income (latest paystubs if employed, affidavits if unemployed)
  • Results from the Matriculation examination or a copy of the Matriculation certificate

2nd and 3rd-year students:

  • Copy of ID document (no certification required)
  • Proof of parents’ or guardians’ income (latest paystubs if employed, affidavit if unemployed)
  • Complete transcripts or academic records (copies only)
  • A documented record of contributions to society (testimonials that include: description of the projects, duration of involvement, what was accomplished, and the number of people who benefited from the projects)

Postgraduate students:

  • Document of identification (copy only)
  • Proof of income from the parent or guardian (latest payslips if employed, affidavit if unemployed).
  • Complete transcripts or academic records (copies only)

Please take note:

  • This bursary must be applied for again if you have applied before.
  • There is no requirement to certify documents and they can be faxed or emailed.

Closing Date

The last date of submission of the application is 31 March 2024. Applications received after the closing date will not be considered – to guarantee your application is considered, apply before the deadline.
