If you want to become a police officer you do not have to obtain a diploma or degree but you must have passed matric with the compulsory languages and mathematics or mathematical literacy.
When the South African Police Service (SAPS) plans to hire new recruits they will advertise trials in the newspapers and on their site throughout the year.
The requirements to become a police officer are as follows:
- You must be a South African citizen
- You must be at least 18 years old but under the age of 30 years old
- You must have a valid driver’s license
- You must not have a criminal record
- You must be fluent in English and at least one other official language.
Those who choose to apply to SAPS trials will be subjected to fitness, psychometric and integrity testing, and medical evaluations during the recruitment, selection, and enlistment process.
Successful Police Trainees will be subjected to continuous security and fitness screening which includes continuous verification of criminal profile as well as medical and physical fitness.
You have the option to become a police official or a civilian employee. Police officials focus on preventing and combating crime while a civilian employee will work in a supporting role such as administration, clerical responsibility, or procurement.
