Caregivers Can Now Apply For Sassa Child Support Grant

Following their recent decision to increase a social grant, the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has revealed that caregivers now also qualify to benefit from this grant. Here are the stipulated requirements by Sassa for beneficiaries to qualify.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has recently announced that with effect from Wednesday, 1 June 2024, caregivers who qualified for the Child Support Grant (CSG) Top-Up grant can apply at any Sassa local office or online at sassa.gov.za.

The Child Support Grant (CSG) Top-Up grant was created to help orphaned children’s relatives meet their necessities. The goal is to maintain them in their extended family’s environment while also keeping them in their familiar homes.

Sassa further stated that the qualifying children will receive their baseline Child Support Grant of R480, as well as an additional R240, for a total of R720.

To be considered eligible for the grant, applicants must demonstrate that a child is an orphan by providing the documentation listed below.

  • Certified copies of the death certificates of the child’s parents, or
  • Where the death certificate of one of the parents cannot be obtained by the applicant, a certified copy of the death certificate of one parent plus an affidavit by the applicant attesting to the unknown status of the child’s other parent.

The Department continued to state:

“This provision is a critical part of the total legal solution to the foster care problem because it will allow relatives caring for orphans to obtain a social grant quickly by going directly to Sassa rather than requiring a social worker’s investigation, report, and court order.”
