Unisa Says Its Accounting Programmes Remain Accredited

The University of South Africa (Unisa) has recently had to clarify certain allegations relating to the accreditation status of some of its programmes. The institution said the following in refuting the allegations

Following recent media reports alleging that the accreditation status of the university’s accounting programmes is not up to date, Unisa has stated that these programmes remain accredited by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA)

In a statement by the regulatory body, shared by Unisa on their website, SAICA stated that their accreditation with Unisa still remains in place.

SAICA confirms that it has not withdrawn its accreditation of Unisa. In SAICA’s recent accreditation visit to Unisa, areas of improvement were identified for which Unisa has already submitted a plan to address the matters outlined in the SAICA report.

SAICA further stated this incident of misreporting in relation to the accreditation status of their programme is not unique to Unisa as other institutions have been in the same position.

The accountancy regulatory body continued by stating that they have not de-accredited any institutions of higher learning and that they work with each provider to ensure that their programmes maintain SAICA accreditation for the benefit of the programme’s students.

SAICA also assured students currently registered on UNISA’s programmes, accredited by SAICA, that Unisa is indeed currently fully accredited by SAICA.
