The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) received an allocation of R47.3 billion to fund public university and college students. It has been found that there are issues with student registrations which have resulted in Higher Education calling for students to take necessary steps to resolve the issues that have surfaced.
Higher Education Minister Dr. Blade Nzimande has revealed that a number of students have made duplicated registrations at different tertiary institutions. Nzimande has confirmed that 2,481 Nsfas students have been found to have done this.
It has been reported that the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) has received registration claims from more than a single institution.
In a statement, Nzimande said:
To rectify this, students are urged to deregister from institutions that they are not studying at.
The affected Nsfas students have also been instructed to submit evidence to Nsfas, so that funds can be released to the correct institution.
The bursary scheme covers accommodation, transport, living allowance, book allowances and incidental/personal care allowances.
According to Nsfas, this bursary scheme provides financial support to disadvantaged students who wish to further their studies at South African public universities or TVET colleges.
Higher Education had revealed that there had been a 7% increase in the number of funded students in 2024 compared to 2024. In the 2024 academic year, Nsfas was allocated R42 billion to fund 421,331 university students and 202,055 TVET College students.
