A TVET COLLEGE IS WHAT?
The government has created Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges in an effort to address the lack of skilled workers in the nation. A TVET degree gives students the practical and occupational skills they need to land a job in South Africa. The institutions provide a range of technical programs with varying lengths, giving students the option of taking short courses or pursuing formal diploma programs.
NSFAS IS WHAT?
In order to increase access to higher education for disadvantaged students in South Africa, NSFAS serves as the government’s principal agency for managing funds. NSFAS determines which students meet the requirements for financial support through its processes and systems, and then distributes funding in accordance with those findings.
FUNDED TRAINING BY NSFAS
Together, these two government-backed organizations are encouraging impoverished students to pursue higher education. As a result, NSFAS pays TVET colleges’ programs that have been approved by the minister. Students must inquire about funding from their specific colleges, however, NSFAS has published a generic list of supported programs available through TVET colleges. These consist of:
Engineering courses at NQF levels 2-4 and Report 191 N1-N6 include those in engineering and related design, electrical infrastructure, civil engineering construction, information technology, and computer science.
Business courses – Business & Utility Studies (National Certificate – Vocational) NQF levels 2-4 & Report 191 N1-N6; Management; Marketing; Office Administration; Commerce courses – Finance; Economics & Accounting;

Pre-Learning Programme (PLP)
TVET College-approved funded qualifications fall into four broad categories:
Pre-Vocational Learning Programme (PLP): Since this qualification is not included in the NQF, the NSFAS will only provide funding for one academic term of study toward this qualification.
NSFAS will only finance a student for one academic term on this qualification for Report 191 introductory courses even if NATED/Report 191 credentials are registered on the NQF as National N certificates.
NC(V) qualifications that are listed on the NQF with the originator specified as Generic Provider – NCV and the qualification type National Certificate are considered to be a part of the General and Further Education and Training Sub-framework.
